numb on side of face....

by fireonice, May 16, 2008 06:13AM
I have had this happen exactly the same two times now... about 2 months ago, and then again 4 days ago...
It starts with the right eye becoming totally bloodshot on the right side of my right eye, like something burst....then maybe a half hour to hour later, my eye area started feeling weird, then it spread to the side of my head, into my ear, the entire canal...it is a wierd feeling, I want to describe it as numbness, but I can still feel when you touch the skin, the area feels swollen, or puffy but if you look at my face, it is not....the muscles to move my eyes are sore and my eye hurts if you press on the closed lid. This spread down my neck and the one muscle  (SCM) felt tender, swollen, like I strained it or something, but I did not....
The first time I went to my doctor, who was clueless, and ran blood tests and sent me to an ENT. By the time I got to the ENT (days later for the appt) it was going away and could only tell her what it was like, as it was almost gone....she said to try a neurologist, but that it is probably a one time thing, I think she used the word 'anomoly', and we may never know what it was and will probably not happen again. Due to insurance problems, I was not able to get to a neurologist right away...
4 days ago, it happened again, at 3:30pm, the eye started. Somone else noticed it first, then 1/2 hour later everything else described above started. Since it was a Friday, the only one who would see me was my eye doctor. He said my eyes themselves looked ok,other than the bloodshot part. Eye pressure was normal (11), and after describing what I was feeling, said it sounded like something involving the nerves (like maybe viral or something) and to see a neurologist. Monday I saw my PCP (need referral for neuro), and he was going to take blood again, I said no, I need tests to find out why this is happening. He said go to neuro. I called about 8 different neurologists in an hour. They either were not in my plan, the phone was disconnected, call went to voice mail (sounded like personal phone...huh?) or was not going to be in office till at least next Tuesday. I went back to my PCP (was making calls from his lobby), and they said, then go to ER...so off I went.....5 hours later I walked out with copies of blood work (all perfect), and told that my catscan was normal, no tumors, no bleeds....I said, I know that, I need a test to find out what is wrong with the nerve, before this goes away and I have to wait till it happens again.....the doctor said, go to your neurologist....I kept calm, realizing that no one heard a word that I said when I walked in.....
I have an appt for this Friday with a neurologist.....but it is starting to go away, and will certainly be normal by Friday....do you have ANY idea what this could be and/or what tests are needed???I am so frustrated with the thought that I may have to wait for it to happen again..and would tests show what it is if the sympoms are gone?
Any help would be appreciated
