by jenna2007, May 16, 2008 06:57AM
Hello all

A family friend (20 yrs old) had a surgery to remove a tumour from his leg ..
and these are the biopsy results: (can someone explain it and does anyone know if amputation is recommended in this case? )

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Diagnosis:
Upper tibia, side not specified, excision:
-Osteoblastic osteosarcoma, high grade.see note.

Note:
The tumor is of conventional type with prominent osteoid production, cellular atypia and atypical mitotic figures
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank u :)

Hi.  Your friend has osteosarcoma, which is the most common type of malignant (cancerous) bone tumor for his age group.  Treatment of this disease usually consists of an initial three cycles of chemotherapy (called neoadjuvant chemotherapy) to reduce the size of the tumor, followed by surgery.  The type of surgery to be done depends on the size and extent of the tumor.  If the tumor is not very extensive, then wide excision is usually sufficient.  If the tumor involves a large part of the bone and is very bulky, then this is the only time that amputation is resorted to.
