Upcoming surgery

by hma95, May 16, 2008 03:41PM
Hi,

Hoping someone can answer my questions so I can read up on what is to come.  My husband (about a month in a half ago) went to the ER for lower stomach pain, after 7 hours we found out that his bladder was 3 times normal size and had to have a catheter to empty his bladder and had to wear it for a week.  Everyone was sure it was his prostate causing the problem.  A week after this, the catheter was removed by the urologist and he was put on flowmax.  This past Wed., he had a cystoscope done and the urologist told us that the problem is not the prostate, but the muscle under the bladder, it doesn't want to open and he was retaining urine again, about a half a litter was currently in his bladder.  The dr. also told us that it looks like this has been going on a lot longer than what he originally thought because the bladder was "pretty beat up!"  The surgery will be for cutting this muscle under the bladder and can not be done with laser or minimally evasive type of surgery.  The only other option would be catheterization for the rest of his life.  My husband is 61 years young and the catheterization is not an option to him.

So, my question is, is everything the urologist told us true about having to have a full blown, cut wide open surgery the only option?  Also, what is the name of this procedure so I can at least read up on it and what it will consist of?  He will have a catheter for a week after surgery and I think that part scares my husband as much as the surgery itself.  Oh, the other thing the urologist told us is that on normal people this surgery has a 80% success rate, but my husband's percentage will be less because of the damage already done to his bladder and if this doesn't work, catheterization will be the only option left if surgery is unsuccessful.  I'm praying this surgery works and if not, that there IS another option(s).

Thanks so much for your time!!

No one knows what this surgery is called?  It would REALLY put my mind at ease to at least know what it is called so I can read up on it and what to expect for my husband.  We are both very scared both from the surgery and if it doesn't work, possible other options.

Thanks so much!
