Extraction gone wrong?

by spherical, May 16, 2008 04:24PM
Medical conditions - Delayed Pressure Urticaria (any pressure causes huge swelling to that area lasting 24-48+ hours)
                            - Alergies (pain killers, some antibiotics and most random medications)

Around 2 months ago I cracked a tooth completely down the centre, half fell out straight away, including half of the root and the other I pulled out with a little wiggling a few weeks later.  Two weeks after this a small piece of tooth pushed through the gum and fell out.  Some days after another piece pushed its way through the side of my gum and was constantly catching on my tongue.  There was never any pain or infection.  This piece just didn't want to come out so I visited the dentist thinking it wouldn't be too much trouble to remove.  (Bad experience before had made me unwilling to go sooner)

I was given two injections, one in the side of the gum and the other in the roof of my mouth (which almost instantly caused the palete to swell and make it hard to breath).  I just closed my eyes, hoping the reaction didn't get any worse and that it would soon be over.  The dentist poked around a little and I felt a piece of something land on my tongue, over I though.  They then proceeded to poke around and then pushed something hard into the space where the tooth once was.  There was alot of pressure and alot of cracking.  She was poking, pushing and drilling for what seemed like forever.  She kept sending the assistant out for different instruments, doing more pushing and poking and finally after 30 minutes she held up infront of me a tooth.  A whole tooth, except where it had been drilled and smashed whilst she was trying to get it out.  I was given 3 stitches in the side of my gum and antibiotics and told to return in a week to have the stitches out.

I left there gobsmacked in more ways than one.  I picked up the antibiotics and straight away took the only pain killers I am not allergic too.  Later the swelling got worse, I had expected it because of the urticaria.  My lips, tongue, mouth, the whole left side of my face.  What I couldn't understand was the being able to "breath" with my mouth closed.  It was hard to drink and impossible to eat, even talking was annoying as strange sounds came from where my tooth once was.  After a week of not being able to sleep, hardly eat or drink, open my mouth or talk properly I returned to the dentist to have the stitches out.  Another painful experience but over fast.  I was told to take another course of antibiotics, even though when I asked if I had got an infection I was told no.  I couldn't wait to get back out of there.

After a while I realised that since the stitches had gone I could once again open my mouth, talk and eat without too much pain.  I had a little peek at where the stitches had been and was horrified.  It seemed that the inside of my mouth had been stitched to my gum and now apart again there was a gapping hole.  Not just a hole but what I can only imagine is what is left of smashed up jawbone.  There is no gum left on the side of where the "tooth" was just exposed jagged bone.  Also on the inside, palete area is a very painful protrusion.

I am dare I say, a little scared to return to the dentist and have no idea if my mouth will ever be the same again.  Will I now always have this exposed bone and painful lump on my palete?

Please help!!

Go straight to another dentist or clinic attached to a dental hospital and get it fixed.DON'T WAIT' IT CAN MAKE YOU SERIOUSLY ILL. From my personal experience you have to get somebody else involved. 8 weeks ago I had a 'routine extraction' which went wrong and the dentist left a whole root in my gum with the top exposed like a little 'pedestal' and told me it was bone which would eventually heal over. Has now affected the one next to it and I have 3 ABSCESSES IN MY MOUTH. Had the root extracted yesterday by another dentist after two further visits to the old one and he had to dig it out but only took a few minutes.
your dentist is no good, and another one will fix this OK but YOU MUST NOT LEAVE IT!!

It is coming up to 2 weeks since the extraction and I am feeling worse than ever.  I tried for days and days to get in to see another dentist but it is imposible.  Doctors sent me to the local "walk in centre" who sent me away with a phone number which turned out to be an advice line.  They advised me to get a 2nd opinion from another dentist asap.  Every dentist I called either did not treat other dentists patients, or I had to join their books first (lowest waiting time I was given was 3 weeks) or didn't have any emergency slots available.  I finally managed to speak to a lovely lady at the local hospital who then took on my case, but she too hit brick walls and it seems my only option is to return to the original dentist.  They can't fit me in for another 3 days.

I just don't think I can last in this much pain any longer.  If I breath through my mouth the bare bone and extraction site hurts and if I breath through my nose the whole of the left side of my face hurts, even my eye.  The sore palete makes me constantly nausious and to top it all, the tooth next to the extraction is loose and painful.

I never even went in for a tooth extraction or had any xrays before treatment and had I known what she was doing I would never have agreed.

Going to go try the hospital now, I hope they don't turn me away too.
