complex cyst found with a CA 125 score of 40

A complex cyst was found on my left ovary. My doctor ordered a CA 125 and I scored at 40. Is this bad? I saw that 0-34 was normal. I also read that some time ago the norm was 0-40. I'm just wondering whether I should be concerned and what my diagnosis is.

Hello.  The CA -125 marker can be elevated for other reasons, including cysts and most of the time they are benign.  I have a complex cyst on my left ovary and a high CA - 125 and I don't have any symptoms.  Even so, since it has gotten bigger over time, I need to have surgery to remove it and the doctor wants to check me out completely to be sure that it's benign.

If you are premenopausal, then CA125 is not a good indicator of what is going on.  It is usually used as a marker for those who have cancer and are going through chemo.  I am glad that your doctor is being proactive.  I think different doctors go by different scales on what is "normal".  Please do not hesitate to call your doctor with any questions that you may have.  Keep us posted and I will be praying for you.

I agree with all the above. There's an awful lot of things that can contribute to an elevated CA-125 especially in younger women. That's why they really don't like to use it solely as a diagnostic tool.. What did the Dr. indicate would be the next course of treatment? Unfortunately, there are not always symptoms.. even with the more serious cysts. . So we can't rely on that either I'm afraid..
     Also, how large was the cyst? and was it found on an TVUS? Let us know .. There's lots of information here.
