Reattaching my kidney

by Mike627, May 17, 2008 11:03PM
April 1, 2008 I had back surgery through my stomach. In the process they accidentally cut my ureter into and nicked a vien. They said the ureter was ruined and they probably couldn't reattach my kidney and I would loose it and could donate for a transplant that it was no big deal, I could live OK with one. The next week they discovered cancer on my working kidney. They removed half of that kidney but don't think they got all the cancer. Now they plan to try to reattach my kidney June 5, 2008 by making a ureter out of a piece of my small intestions or pulling my bladder up towards my kidney and taking a flap of skin from my bladder and hooking it up to my kidney. If the reattachment doesn't work, they'll take that kidney out and I'll live on half a kidney with cancer in it until it starts progressing and the they'll take that out and I'll be on dialysis the rest of my life. I'm 58. How long can you live on dialysis? Does this sound like they'll be able to reattach the kidney? Any sugesstions? Please let me hear from you ASAP. My time is getting short!

You might want to get a second opinion from a urologist familiar with kidney tumors.

Did they remove the other kidney from your body?  The kidney that is half removed and with diseased cells probably will not function properly.  You need to follow your electrolytes to see how it is managing along with creatinine clearance and other lyte tests.  If urine is proper Ph and not showing protein, blood, or casts the remaining kidney may be functioning.  Medications must be chosen carefully and may need to be taken in reduced dosages.  If you develop irritable mood, fatigue, or other symptoms you are not filtering wastes properly.  If you have resources check with professional re that botched surgery.  Can remaining ureter be attached to healthy kidney on opposite side?  If not and kidney function begins to cease, the K will rise and you will require dialysis.  CR is often taken and will rise above 120 over 200 trouble is looming.  If checking urine do lytes osmolarity 24 hour collection along with BS, BUN, LYTES, OSMOLARITY and lytes must be full. Follow Calcium carefully.  Calculations for losses and so on done by formulas.  They should not leave CA in kidney behind at all.  Who is this Doctor or Doctors?  Go out of State for second opinion if they begin to label or act as if they do not understand one thing you say.  You need referrals to some decent specialist's and someone that can reconstruct the water works.  Monitor heart, liver, thyroid, parathyroid, and watch for esonophils, phosphorus, increased WBC, platelets etc etc.  Lately it is very disconcerting to discover the lack of honesty amongst professionals or disclosure of actual state of affairs.  If they avoid, you know to go elsewhere. I only give ideas but it does not hurt to check things out.

I have had diarreha for as long as I can remember I get it when I'm scared when I eat certin foods, for no reason at all. I have it all the time I know for at least 20 years that I can remember and I'm only 25. Sometimes I worry that something is wrong with me but after having this problem so long I figure it would have presented more of a problem by now or a doctor would have picked up on whatever was causeing it. Any ideas as to what it might be?
