post BCG pain

by Tippytwo, May 18, 2008 06:54AM
After his BCG treatment this week, my husband has been experiencing a lot of pain.  He contacted the doctor who prescribed an antibiotic, ciprofloxacin 500mg, and phenazopyridine 200mg.  Last night, after one dose of each he had excrutiating pain in his lower left back and penis.  It lasted about 15 - 20 minutes and then the pain in his back subsided, but returned 2 hours later.  Again subsiding.  We had pain medication in the house so he took one and was able to get through the night ok, although he was up every 2hrs to urinate.  He is still having pain in those areas, although not as intense as last night.  He did take another dose of the antibiotic this morning.

Could this pain be the result of an infection, or should he be seeking further medical help?

I am not a doctor, but I've been through a series of BCG treatments for recurrent bladder cancer. The urologist warned me the effects are cumulative, meaning the more treatments you receive, the greater the possibility of side effects. Most common are painful urination and flu-like symptoms, including joint pain. Doctors consider the risk of these side effects to be offset by the rewards of the vaccine. Fortunately, I did not have any adverse reactions, but the staff told me other people reacted differently and really had problems with the BCG treatments.

Contact your urologist and good luck!

Thank you, my husband didn't have as much pain yesterday, so hopefully the antibiotics are doing the trick.
