Nuvaring question

I have just started using nuvaring a couple days ago but i had some questions, can any of you help? when you first insert nuvaring you shouldnt have unprotected sex for a week . well, after 3 weeks of having it in you take it out before replacing it with another, during the week it is out you get your period, but the week after that do you have to use other methods of birth control? or does the period somehow affect that ?
