L4-5 Disc Narrowing/Facet Joint Arthitis

by hlviher, May 18, 2008 10:04AM
After a recent extremely painful hip/lower back pain episode (1.5 weeks long) from a aggressive Chiropractic adjustment of my hips, I got my spine and hips X-rayed. Since there were intense shooting pains and spasms down my groin area and later down my lower back and buttock area (anterior and posterior hip pain), I figured that it was a hip problem. The x-rays show no hip or pelvis abnormality, but they DO show:

"Nondegenerative disc space narrowing at L4-5. Bilateral facet joint artritis at L4-5. SI joints normal."

What does this mean? Is this disc issue the cause of my recent and debilating hip pain episode? If so, then what can I do to prevent a recurrance? I'm an otherwise healthy 34-year old woman and, since thise pain struck, have felt old and crippled. This is not how I want to live. Any advice on the symptoms and implications of this problem and recommendations for treatment would be appreciated. Thank you!

Nondegenerative disc space narrowing at L4-5 means you probably suffer from disc injury....
But,according to your symptom, main probability is soft tissue injury around L4/L5 which lead to your recent and debilating hip pain, groin pain and buttock pain etc.it's conduct pain not referral pain (nerve root seem ok),So ,I don't you  have current hip problem .

So understand your condition, then,a lot of therapy can help to relive inflammation of soft tissue, both deep tissue massage and intensive acupuncture be recommendated.

Good luck!

Thank you, Zak. I'll start both deep tissue massage and chinese acupuncture treatments right away.

degenerative disk disease, it happens as we age. It is wear and tear.

Actually, I've recently found out that mine is due to a spinal injury from an accident 7 years ago that wasn't treated and is now causing problems. I have over a year of chiropractic and physical therapy ahead of me, and then I'll be fine.

Thank you for your response.

Cheers,
Heidi
