Taking too many vitamins

by JustAboutDue, May 18, 2008 04:42PM
My gynecologist prescribed me Prenate DHA when I first found out I was pregnant.  She gave me a box and said take two a day.  It's my last week of pregnancy and when I went to the pharmacy I asked for one week's worth and the girl said then you need 7.  I said no, 14, and she explained that I am only supposed to take 1 a day.  The entire pregnancy I was taking two and didn't realize I was only supposed to take 1. My obgyn also prescribed me an iron supplement because my blood work said my iron was low.  How could it have been low if I was doubling up on a prenantal vitamin when I wasn't spoosed to?  Now I am worried I hurt the baby somehow.  Any advice?

On this link for Prenate DHA,  it says the suggested dose is 2 caplets per day,  or as directed by your doc or pharmacist.

Lots of women became iron deficientin pregnancy,  and prenate DHA wouldn't address that,  I don't think.  So that's why you got an iron supplement.

I think you're okay.  ;D

I just went to the website you posted the prenate.com and if you read all the way through the "Instruction Manual" it does say ONE capsule per day or as directed by your physician.  My concern would be all of the warnings on there that say NO MORE THAN 3 Omega-fatty acids per day and an iron overdose.  I would DEFINATELY call your OB first thing tomorrow and ask why you were asked to take 2. It may be PERFECTLY fine and you have nothing to worry about. I'd ask for an explanation as to why the package says 1 and he directed you to take 2.  I'd also call a local 24 hour pharmacy, if you have one, today and ask what the reprecusions of taking 2 per day your whole pregnancy has. Sometimes pharmacists are more up on that than the doc. since it's their meds. Our local Walgreens are pretty good about answering questions like that.  Worth a shot!!!  Try to STOP worrying as there is nothing you can change and you did as directed by your doc., get answers today/tomorrow and hopefully you will get his resolved and have peace of mind.  Good Luck

I feel so much better.  My doctor said that the doses are so low that nothing could happen.  Thank goodness

Glad you called your Dr.  If you were taking it wrong, you would have been running out before it was time to fill and the pharmacist would have caught it.  I bet you talked with a tech, if you ever are unsure, ask for the pharmacist.  When they enter it in, they may see a quantity of 7, but I believe you do take 2 caps with that one.  The pharmacist would actually know this more than your Dr. as they have the packaging right in front of them.  Relax and good luck!  Also, I would keep on the vitamins, they say to do so for the entire first year after baby.  I stopped around 4 months and was so worn down from a colicky baby, my Dr. told me to get back on them and it really helped.
