Rubbing lower arm to create tingling in hand?

by jac515, May 18, 2008 05:54PM
Not sure if I'm posting this question in the right place.  I have had wrist pain for more than a month, and will be seeing a doctor tomorrow.  This, however, is not what I'm writing to ask.  In an attempt to determine whether carpal tunnel could be the cause, I experimented with touching and feeling different places on my arm.  I stumbled upon something unexpected.  On both my arms, there is an area on the thumb side between the wrist and elbow, which, when softly stroked, creates a tingling sensation in my them and index finger and part of my hand.  I believe this is the median nerve.  But is such a sensation when this area is stroked normal?  I have never noticed it before.

Hi there.

The tingling sensation occurs if the nerve supplying the area in focus gets stimulated, either by noxius stimulus (those causing pain) or outside mechanical forces such as what you were doing.  This is a normal occurrence and should not give much anxiety.  You may also try stroking the ulnar nerve, which is located at the elbow area, at the side of the smallest finger.  I hope your appointment with the doctor will be fruitful and that the wrist pain can be addressed adequately.  Regards.
