15 year old with Graves Disease

by CottyyB, May 19, 2008 07:50AM
Our daughter has been dx with Graves disease.  She is on 30mg of tapozole.  Our problem is these seere headaches.  They come in waves mostly from her forehead on the right side.  She is dizzy and has stomahaches during these episodes. The headaches are there during the day but are not as painful as at night.  Her heartrate fluctuates and she is on a beta blocker for that. We were told that Graves disease does not cause headaches.  She had a MRI and it was normal. She has only been on the meds for about 3 weeks. These headaches are killing her. It breaks our hearts to see her like this.

This discussion is related to Normal TSH with hyperthyroid symptoms.

I have Graves as well, but I am on PTU. I am no doc, but I think that the headaches may be a side effect of the Tapazole. I have been on PTU since December & have noticed that I get more headaches than usual, but they are bearable. You may want to see if she can switch from Tapazole to PTU, but check with the Doc.

I have graves and do get headaches when I am hyper. They are gone when my labs resolve themselves, but I had a cat scan done to see if there were any other issues. If there is one thing I have learned with this disease is that not all symptoms affect all people (I never had trouble sleeping even when at my worst) and this is a disease of patience.  Give the meds some time and keep checking her labs.  Good luck!!
