When hiking steep mountains or hills I have shortness of breath and tightness in my back and chest. I have had this condition most of my adult life......What can I do to remedy this problem so I make hike with more ease?

This discussion is related to shortness of breath with activity.

Hello and welcome starlighttar!

Have you had a physical to be certain there is no medical reason for the SOB and tightness?  Have you asked your doctor for suggestions?

If it is muscular, maybe Ibuprofen or Aleve would help.  However, I would not suggest taking either one without prior consent from your physician.  Can you use a heating pad or hot compress after the hike?
