Prednisone problems

by Martix, May 19, 2008 11:43AM
I know that prednisone can cause a lot of problems but I was wondering if it messed with hormones at all.  I've been having some really strange symptoms not related to AIH.  My doctor suggest that I go see a OB/GYN so I got an appointment.  I'm really hoping that I have nothing on top of the AIH.  Could being on imuran cause hormonal problems?  I'm just trying to figure out if this could be related to the drugs I'm taking.

Could you be a little more specific? Do you mean like not having your period? I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that prednisone can mess with menstration, that it would not be unusual.

Yes it has to do with my periods but also I've been having really severe pain in the lower right near where my appendix or overy would be.  I've had a couple regular doctors check it out and they say it's not a hernia or anything that has to do with my appendix.  That's why they suggested an OB/GYN.  I've also had discharge from my nipple and that only started after I began taking the imuran.  I'm getting checked out today and hopefully they'll figure out what's wrong.

She is diagnoned with auto immune hepititis scirrosis of the liver and on 40 mg of prednizone.Never before the Prednisone did she hve this problem. It all start ed whe the doctor said she had high levels of potassium and rush to the hospital. The nextweek she had her first coma and once again rushed to the hospital out cold.with a hig ammonia level and was given lactlose enemas to rid the ammonia after that she had her belly biopsyed and got an infection and went into another coma. She came home last week and once again she went into the coma this weekend. Iwonder if this time the hig sugar count plus prednizone had anything todo with it.  I was not able to give her insulin to lower the suger like they did in the hospital She in not diabetic.  any answers Matt ***@****

Well, new to the AIH scene as I'm researching what could be wrong with me, but I'm living proof that steroids mess with your hormones and menstrual cycles.

I was put on dexamethasone (similar to prednisone but stronger) when I was diagnosed with adrenal hyperplasia.   It's caused wacky problems with my menstrual cycle.  I've had really pelvic/ovarian pain for months now.  I'm also on the 11th week of my menstrual period... yes, 11 weeks of bleeding.

I've been to the obgyn, who tried birthcontrol to stop the period, but no luck so far.  I got angry and quit taking the dexamethasone and the bleeding has almost stopped and the pain is completely gone.

My endocrinologist, obgyn, and gp all say that steroids can affect female hormones and cycles, but it's rare and no one knows yet why it effects some and not others.

I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome long ago and so I've basically read everything I can get my hands on about hormone imbalances.  If you're having clear/whitish discharge from your nipples then you should have your prolactin levels checked.  Some medications can cause (hyper)prolactinemia.  Check the meds you're on and see if it's a side effect listed.

Hope this helps.  Best of luck to you.
