Cold sores...

by HAL9000, May 20, 2008 07:02PM
(I hope I didn't put the question in a wrong topic...)
I have herpes (HSV-1) since I was a child. I experience cold sores whenever my immune system weakens for some reasons (poor diet, stress, etc). The thing always appears around my lips, sometimes inside my nose (once it appeared near my eye). Unfortunately, this tends to happen at least once in two months, and it really pisses me off (excuse my bluntness). I have tried all meds I could find, but none seem to be able to prevent it well. I'm no expert, but I understand that HSV can't be cured completely, and that I'm basically stuck with it for the rest of my natural (and unnatural) life. So, I was hoping that, if I can't cure the disease, I might at least cure the symptoms...

Can you please point me to some good solutions for preventing and/or curing cold sores?
Thank you in advance...

Hi.

Was the diagnosis of cold sores given to you by a physician?

I suggest that if you have not been assessed by a doctor yet, you may need to have an initial assessment done. Cold sores are recurrent. Stress, infections, and a poor diet may trigger their recurrence. You may need antiviral medications for this. Have you been prescribed any oral medications for the condition?

Well, my doctor said (15 years ago :) ) that HSV has passed the incubation period and that it resides somewhere in my nerve system, inactive, waiting for my system to weaken. There is no real cure, he said, only ways to attempt to prevent the symptoms (cold sores), or ways to speed up the healing of the skin when they come out.
I have some kind of paste with zinc-oxide. It doesn't really do much, but it helps to prevent one sore from spreading or advancing...

Hi.

When was the last time you saw a physician?

I suggest that you have this assessed. You have noted that the sores are not only localized in one area but they are also very recurrent and affect other parts of the face. You may need some antiviral medications to help hasten healing. Pain relievers may also help in alleviating the pain that comes with the cold sores.

Here is a url which you might find very informational:
