Dental Crowns - Teenagers

by drews, May 21, 2008 01:33AM
I am a 17 year old female.

My dentist tells me that I require 8 dental crowns immediately, and perhaps a further 2 crowns soon. Dental crowns are very expensive and I am concerned that my dentist is trying to "sell" me something that I do not require. Has anyone ever heard of a 17 year old needing 10 crowns ?

Apparently the all the enamel on the back of my top row of teeth has worn off and the teeth are very fine and have started to chip. I have a small chip in one of my 2 front teeth now. How and why would this have happened to my teeth ? Will my teeth continue to deteriorate underneath the new crowns ? Are there any alternative treatments - or this my only option ?

I suggest you seek the opinion of a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon or a dentist who specializes in Oral Medicine.  It is important to  rule out certain conditions which may predispose your child to cavities (dentogenesis and enamelgenesis imperfecta, changes in salivary content and flow, esophageal reflux, bulemia and others).
