Cluster of 3 large nodes stuck together on back of 8yr olds head

My 8 year old son showed me last night that he has a large lump on the back of his neck, just to the left of where the spine meets the head, and just below the hair line. When I say large, it's approx. 2" in diameter. I felt it and it moves around, but feels like it is 3 lymph nodes that are stuck together....when you move it, it moves as one "unit", but when feeling around the edge of it you can tell that it is 3 things that have "fused" together. He says it doesn't hurt when I feel it. He's not sick at all with anything, nor has he been for a long time. Anyone have any experience with this? Do I take him to the doctor, even though he's not sick? We were on a camping trip over the weekend and he pulled several ticks off of himself...I don't know if that would be connected to it or not.
