Recurrent ovarian cyst?

by sod041667, May 21, 2008 12:48PM
I had a hysterectomy 3 years ago and only have part of my right ovary left.  For the last year I've had recurring cyst on my remaining ovary and this last time I had 3 cyst all 3cm or larger.  I've had them for about 3 months now.  The first ultrasound they were all simple cyst but on the last ultrasound the tech said they didn't look "as good" - some had "debris" in them.

My question is - what does this really mean for me?  I'm having the ovary removed in a few weeks because I've been in so much pain and the doctor says it's time to take it out.  During my hysterectomy he ended up cutting me because my left ovary was embedded in the wall and he had to "dig" it out.  Am I looking at this with the right ovary too? - he couldn't really say for sure but said there is a chance he'll have to perform a laparotomy instead of the laprascope.  What are your thoughts?

Just ready to get this over with and quit worrying about it.

Hi there,
Sorry you are feeling so lousy... That sure isn't fun. I too have cysts with debris. They think the debris can be either blood, fat or calcium deposits. They usually will keep an eye on cysts to make sure they resolve. Sometimes depending on the size of the cyst they need to remove, they need a larger area than the scope will allow for the ovary to pass through, hence why you might need a laparotomy. Im not sure about the ovary being embedded in the wall, that's a tough call and they probably won't know for sure til they get in there. Hope this helped. Take care and keep us posted

Hi, I just had both ovaries out, similar situation to yours. I was told it was a wait and see regarding the laproscopic vs laparotomy for size and embedded reasons too. My left was a bit embedded but I still was able to do it laproscopically. It might depend on the size of the cysts and how attached it is. I am 3 weeks postop tomorrow. I would be happy to answer any questions anytime... I can tell you this, it feels much better now that the cysts are gone, and all the worries that came with them. Be sure and discuss biopsy and hormone plans before surgery so you are prepared with info.
Good luck, keep us updated!

I had OvCy from the age of 18 to 32.  They are no fun and very painful at times. Once, you have this surgery, by whatever means you will feel so much better. All I would add is to make sure you are very comfortable with your surgeon.  You don't want any remnants left and you need a very skilled surgeon to work around the mess in there.   I have a friend who got remnant cysts and she was floored because she didn't have ovaries or so she thought.  Also, a lady that I take chemo with is 74 and she had everything taken out 40 yrs ago for unspecified reasons (she's old they don't talk about stuff like that), but apparently they left a little teeny tiny piece and that is where her cancer is. Not that you have cancer, but it is possible for cysts to grow on the most minute piece of tissue so that is why I say you should have the VERY BEST surgeon you can find.
Good luck to you,
Jan

Thanks so much for the response.  I'm so tired of this pain and ready to get it over with.  I do feel comforatable with my surgeon - he has performed many procedures on me over the years and he said he has a general surgeon on standby if he needs to call him in. (kinda scary) I leave for vacation tomorrow and on my way back from the beach I'll go for my pre-op appt. - my surgery is on June 6th.  I just hope I can enjoy vacation without being in so much pain!
I'll keep you posted - thanks again!
