Now what

After 45 years of being told I have every psych problem there ever was, misdiagnosed by probably 100 doctors, and given every drug ever made, including shock treatment, they finally said I am bi-polar!!!!!  Went to the shrink yesterday, and now he says he's not so sure I am bi-polar, he believes I just have severe PTSD.  I've known for a long time that I have PTSD, but didn't know I had nothing else.  Drugs I take are minimal, don't think they know what the hell to do with me anymore, and I have ABSOLUTELY NO FAITH IN SHRINKS ANYMORE.  Boy, I guess people know what they are talking about when they say psychiatry is still in the "infant stages".  I've just about had it!!

Oh yeah, and after 40 years of not being able to sleep, waking up in sheer terror, and taking sleep meds since the age of 12 and having 3 sleep studies, I was ACTUALLY FINALLY DIAGNOSED WITH CHRONIC INSOMNIA!!!!!!   Boy, what a no brainer.

I personally feel it is best to do your own research and discuss your findings with the doctors.  I had episodes for years and I finally decided to do something about it and find out what was wrong with me.  I ask the doctor to so all sorts of test on my and I constantly asked them questions.  I once surfed on the internet while I was having a relaspe... I typed in my sympons and I found out that I was having a manic event. I then  took my finding to the doctor who agreed but still didi not want to diagnoise me.  I had already before hand done lots of reading around depression so I already knew I had depression.    So I put one and one together and told myself I was bipolar.  I read more about the subject with confirmed it to me even more.  I joined the BiPolar fellowship for many years .  3 years later I got a relaspe after having my first child and I was then diagnosed with bipolar..

So for me I believe that you should try to know as much as you can about mental illness.  Do your research and ask plenty of questions, read books, internet and watch programs about the subject...
