How safe is Tylenol in pregnancy?

by ZoesMommy, May 23, 2008 11:31AM
I'll be 11 weeks pregnant tomorrow. I have a sinus infection and my head has been pounding for the last 3 days. I've taken Tylenol, but it hasn't really worked. I've only been taking 500mg every 8-10 hours because I'm afraid of taking too much and harming the baby. Is it possible to have too much Tylenol in pregnancy, and how much would be safe to take to try and get rid of this headache? The last time I took any was last night at 11pm before I went to bed.

Just follow the bottle directions. It will tell you what not to exceed. If you're still uncertain, you could call your doc's office.

Tylenol is safe when taken in moderation during pregnancy (ie, not taking mega-doses every day). I have suffered severe headaches throughout my pregnancy and HAVE to take Tylenol during those times, or else I can't even function. When the headaches are at their worst, I take a full dose - 1,000mg - no more than twice in one day. I also try to use other methods to cope w/the discomfort, like hot or cold compresses and sleep... As JoyRenee suggested, follow the instructions on the bottle and don't exceed the maximum amount. Your baby will be fine - it's important that his/her mommy is feeling good and is happy!! :)

With a sinus headache tylenol may not help.  Atleast it doesn't for me.  Tylenol doesn't work on the root of the problem, that being sinus pressure/congestion.  Try claritin.  Unfortunately sudafed (either psuedoephedrine OR phenylephrine) should not be taken during the first trimester.  You can also try benadryl.  Tylenol is perfectly safe so long as you don't exceed maximum daily doseage on the bottle.    If you are still uncertain, check with your OB...depending on whats' causing your sinus infection he/she may want to give you an antibiotic.

I get migraines really bad, and Tylenol doesnt take them away, but it can holp to take the edge off, but take two extra strenght or 1000mg every 8 hours. I do. As long as you dont take more than that you are fine and so is your baby.

Ok.. I've gotta say, my doctor told me that if I HAVE to... to take Tylenol Sinus...

Yea, it has a little caffeine, and yea it may have  a little aspirin. BUT she said if it's a headache that nothing works for to take 1 dose, and only 1.. and the baby should be fine. When birth defects are caused from medicine, it's usually not from 1 or 2 doses, but rather a continual dose every day for an extended period of time like a week or two or more.

She said every once in a while is safe.. but not too often.
