Fever for 6 weeks - Chills, Flank pain, Hip Joint pain

by PB1233, May 23, 2008 02:42PM
Hi,

I have been experiencing low to high grade fever once or twice a week for the last 6 weeks. My blood work for the most part is normal except the last blood work revealed an elevated WBC of 115000. My CRP and ESR are high. CRP blood works came back with the following numbers, 96, 16, 43, and 83. ANA and RF both are negative.

My symptoms besides the fever are muscle ache, hip joint ache, minor knee pain, and moderate flank pain. I mostly experience the aches while I have the high fevers.

My PSA was also high, 4.5 and so I saw a Urologist who put me on antibiotics citing prostatitis. My question is, could this still be RA? I am definitely going to see a Rheumatologist next week but I would like some additional input.

Thanks,

Hello there, I have some questions, do you have a rash?  Do your fevers come on at the same time of the day?  Have you had any infectious disease ruled out?

I'm glad you'll be seeing a rheumy pretty soon.  I ask these questions because I have Still's disease and it is an arthritis very similar to Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, it is very rare, about 1 out of every 100,000 person gets it.  I have negative ANA and RF, but high ESR, and elevated WBC.

I have a full description of it on my journal page and pictures of the rash I get.  Welcome to our Forum Family.

Thank you for your response. I really appreciate it.

I do not get a rash. My fevers come around Friday every week and mostly I feel very well between Monday and Thursday.

If the Rheumatologist does not come up with anything I will be seeing an Infectious Disease expert.

It sounds like you are having a complete workup done.  That is really good.  Seeing an I.D. Dr is definately a good idea.  Please keep us updated.

Hi,

I just came back from the Rheumatologist. She thinks I may have Stills based on my symptoms. However, she wants me to go and see a Heamatologist to rule out Lymphoma.

I'm really worried about Lymphoma :(

My WBC count is high. Based on my last blood test it was at 11500. I got another CBC done today so we'll see.

Did you have an elevated WBC?

Hi Sweetie, it is good that she is sending you to a hematologist to rule out Lymphoma.  I too, have elevated WBC and I have for many, many months.  Its like they keep looking for something else and they never find anything.  I know that worried feeling all too well, Sweetie.  I am here for you if you need to talk.

The Internation Stills Foundation is a great site to go to.  There is a lot of info there.  I will help you all I can with any questions.  The key with Still's is to start treatment right away before the destruction of joints start.  I hope they can get you in asap with the hematologist and get the lymphoma ruled out so you can start treatment for the Still's.
Please keep me posted, Sweetie.

My first symptoms with this was low back and hip pain and morning stiffness.  The pain was horrendous, and I started having sore throats and swollen lymph nodes.  I began to have a daily fever back in October, it was always the same time, I could almost set my clock to it, with the fevers came the rash and the muscle pain.  And then the arthritis became noticeable, swollen, hot joints, not being able to grasp this or do that.  My husband quit sleeping in the same bed because of my night sweats, I find I have two fever spikes in a 24 hour period.

My ESR is high, WBC are high, I have high total protein.  I can't think off hand what else was off in my labs.  I do know my RF and ANA are negative.

Ada
