Help: My boyfriend has strong food allergies (anaphylactic)

by Steph2008, May 23, 2008 11:59PM
Hello,

my boyfriend has strong food allergies against peanuts, all tree nuts, fish, any kind of seafood, wheat, grapefruits and melons. He has also a strong dust allergy, hey fever and asthma. He had before anaphyulactic shocks after accidentally eating food which contained peanuts, nuts and seafood/fish. Recently, he also had a anaphylactic reaction to an antibiotic.

We are already together since over 8 month and from the very beginning he told me that I also have to keep his diet (thus avoid anything that could even contain minimal traces of food he his allergic against). I have been trying to keep this diet as well as possible and didn't eat anything pre-made but just fresh vegetables, rice and meat. However, two weeks ago I had to go to the hospital and for this purpose I had to eat a specific type of food which contained fish. He told me that I won't be able to kiss him until at least 8 days after. After 7 days I had to take the 'Morning after pill' (we had sexual intercourse without kissing). Now he said he is worried that he is allergic to the 'morning after pill' and again refused to kiss me for 7 days. Those 7 days are nearly over but today he told me that he is not sure if he will kiss me even then because he is scared to get an allergic reaction (he had panic attacks about food before and hardly eats anymore). I do not know how long it takes to get any types of allergens out of my body (not only mouth area...). Could anyone help me? I couldn't find any information on how long it takes to get rid of the allergens.

Thank you!

Hi,

What symptoms does he have at the time of an allergic reaction? Has an allergy test been done?

What does the allergy specialist say? Does your friend carry an epi pen?

What medications is he on for his allergy symptoms?

He should keep antihistamine or antiallergic medications at hand for use in case of an emergency. It would be advisable to avoid substances that he has documented allergies to.

Consult an allergy specialist about his symptoms.

Let us know about the above details and what the allergy specialist advises.

Regards.

I would imagine that it is possible for some food particles to get stuck in between teeth or gums and such even up to days. Nuts and hard stuff like that for sure can get stuck deep in to the gumline and come out days later. I can't really say if they are absorbed and released though the saliva? I don't have these type of allergies and have no idea.

Any pill can contain inactive fillers which he could be allergic to. I would strongly suggest both of you talking to his allergist about birth control options and going through every ingredient. I took an allergy pill that looked like it had a milk product as an inactive filler. So I understand his concern. But how many days I don't know.
