Interesting question! I must say like I use to do: Some don't get as many side effects, and some get more. Finding the right AD can be a whole lot of work. The best medication is the one that gives an individual few side effects and minimizes the main symptom.

Let me for a moment try to paint another picture.
Before I saw the meaning of sleeping aids I used to believe that a sleeping aid was effective a full night, and that you'd sleep all night if you took it.
The sleeping aid that works best for me it the total opposite. It takes anxiety away for about 30 minutes and helps me fall asleep. After that, I get a whole night of restless sleep but at least I've slept ... Which is why I try beating my insomnia without sleeping aids of course. I know that if I only manage to slow my mind down enough, I'll even fall asleep before it's been 2-3 hours laying awake wondering "hm, when will I wake up and realize a whole night has passed?"

So, back to the anti-depressants and the side effects: When a whole lot of time suddenly has passed, the one who's taken the "correct" anti-depressant realizes:
"Whoa, I got here and it wasn't as difficult as I thought it should be."
We can't force the chemistry in our bodies to correct, but we can help it off.

Mind and motion is a strange thing.

Imagine a water-slide at an amusement park. You get up to the top in your bathing shorts and jump into the slide. You ain't sliding down. There was no water. It was dried out.
In a swip-swap we can imagine that be our emotions. With a good anti-depressant medication, the waterslide gets that water added and we run off down in a heeeeeee-ho and an easy mood.

If that makes sense....?
Sorry for rambling *lol*

Unfortunatly it's not really possible to know if Welbutrin alone will help your depression unless you actually try it for several weeks. As for side effects of Welbutrin.... Welbutrin does seem to harbor less risks of side effects than many other antidepressant medications. That doesn't mean it's side effect free.

I question it's effectivness at treating more severe forms of Depression, but I guess it can be effective for some mild to moderate depression. In my case it did absolutly nothing to relieve my depression or anxiety. I have also heard from many others that they had also found welbutrin to be less effective than other meds such as Paxil, Effexor, and Zoloft.

This is probably due to the fact that Welbutrin only inhibits the Reuptake of Dopamine in the brain and does little to effect more important neurotransmitters such as Serotonin and Neurephinepherine.

I just don't consider Welbutrin one of the heavy hitters for depression. At least not by itself. It's more effective when used as an add on drug to SSRI and SNRI type meds.

Although if your depression is mild it can do the trick all by itself.
