My metabolism needs help!

by doublescorpio, May 26, 2008 05:58PM
Hi there,

I am just coming to terms with the fact that I have an eating issue. Growing up as a teenager I was very athletic and healthy, then I began college and so did my poor eating habits. I was a pretty poor arts student, so I basically ate when I could, and it obviously wasn't balanced or healthy. During that time I also made a film which was incredibly stressful and I ended up dropping from 120lbs to 112lbs (5'4'' female, now 23 years, small build). Well after that I gained back my weight and never really had an issue with how much I weighed until I saw myself in a swimsuit last year, and I looked so flabby and out of shape it was unbelievable. I remember thinking that it seemed unfair- the average amount of calories I ate a day exceeded no more than 800, and I ate 2-3 times a day, small portions. I also walk between 3-6 km everyday as I do not own a car. Since then I have been really conscious of what I eat, how much and I began having feelings of guilt whenever I ate something.

Recently I learned that eating only a few small meals a day and not eating healthy throughout the day can slow the metabolism down tremendously. That would make sense as since this fall, even though I've been conscious of how much I eat and am eating better, I have still gained 5 pounds and now have fat pockets where I didn't have them before (thighs, hips, tummy). Last month I started running several miles a day as part of a study on women runners. It had nothing to do with weight loss but I thought it would be a terrific way to get into healthy habits again but that hasn't happened. My runs feel hard and I am low on energy as it is, and right after I run all I feel like eating is junk and high calorie sweets. This doesn't mean I give in... But I STILL haven't shed any of the fat, if anything I feel very unhealthy and unfit compared to my athletic days. I feel like I killed my metabolism with my inability to eat/forgetting to eat/acknowledging I should eat but not eating right etc. habits over the past 5 years. If anyone has any words of advice I would like to hear it, I should see a nutritionist but I cannot at this point since I am a freelancer and do not have a health plan. Thanks in advance!
