pcl reconstruction

by allshookup1, May 26, 2008 08:21PM
6 weeks ago I had "KNEE ARTHROSCOPY WITH POSTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT RECONSTRUCTION, OPEN RECONSTRUCTION OF POPLITEAL FIBULAR LIGAMENT and FIBULAR COLLATERAL LIGAMENT"

A violent car accident 7 months ago left me with a ruptured PCL after the dash board pinned me in the vehicle...
After 6 months it was decided that I had no stability in my knee.  The surgery took over 6 hours.

I am really worried about a few things.

At my post op check up 1 week ago the X-ray showed that a screw in my femor has given way and is sitting crooked in one of the drilled tunnels.  There is a small hard red spot above that incision.
They have an MRI scheduled for next week to see what has happened.  I pray the ligaments healed to the bone before the screw slip.  I cant handle that surgery again.

I  can not bend my knee more than 20%.
The PT worked on it and gave up due to the excruciating pain it caused.

My questions are:

Have you ever had any experience with screws or plugs giving way?
Should I be able to bend by now?  (over 6 weeks post op)
Pain level is still an 8+ .

My Doctor is always in a big hurry.  I dont feel like he spends any time paying attention to any of my injury concerns.  I complained for over 4 months that I didnt feel as if I had any stability.  Finally my PT sent him the notes saying that he could not improve my knee stabilty.  It rolled all over and had a huge sag.  That is when he really made an effort to check my knee movement and schedule surgery.
I dont expect a great personality however I do need to feel confident that he is doing things correctly.

Would you suggest a second opinion?

Can you suggest anyone that specializes in PCL recon???

I appreciate any advice you can give me.
God Bless

I have a PCL injury and surgeory. I didn't have a full range of motion until a year afterward and i still have pain when i contract my hamstring muscles. It is important to understand that the injruy never goes away all together. You will have some pain. 6 weeks with 20%? thats not bad. Swelling and scar tissue prevent the knee from bending. It might be hard, but suck it up when it hurts if you want any breakthrough. When the PT is bending my knee i squeeze my nose really hard to keep from yelling. Don't lose hope. Six weekes is nothing. Wait and work hard at developing your quad.

OMG! the same thing happened to me. I had a PCL avulsion fracture and i had an incomplete reconstruction. Now i have to have more surgery. I recommend Mass General in Boston. The doctors are amazing.

Now i need your advice. I love sports and i was going to go out for the team but i still have an unstable knee and pain. The surgery date is just around the corner and if i don't play my sport then there is no chance of making it the next year.

Should i get the reconstruction now? Or should I wait?
