Pain in my middle back that causes head pain

by jlb9522, May 28, 2008 05:15PM
I was in a massive car accident 3 years ago. I was rear-ended and had subsequent whiplash but sustained no broken bones in my back or neck - thank god.  I went to PT and got my mobility back and went back to work.  I have had back, neck and some head pain since but tylenol and excedrine deal with those. But this past January the pain skyrocked.  It started in the middle of my back on the right.  I woke up 1 morning and had so much pain I thought my lung had collapsed. It even hurt to have the water on my back in the shower.  That same day, I had a headache like no headache I have ever had.  It hurt to bend over and when I tilled over backwards, the pain was excruciating.  I went to my GP and was treated for a non-existant sinus infection. He then ordered sinus and cervical xrays that came back normal. I still had the headache that didn't go away with OTC meds or with heat or ice. I bent over in the store to grab a bottle of water and I almost fainted it hurt so bad.  It felt like someone hit me in between the eyes with a sledge hammer.  I have been back to the GP and have seen an allergist, eye doctor, ENT Dr., orthopedic surgeon, nuerologist and endocrinologist. I have had 4 MRIs, an ultrasound and had tons of blood drawn. All that anyone can come up with is that I have 3 buldging discs in my neck and 1 in my mid back (T8-9). I have gone to PT and I go to acupunture to try to get any relief.  The pain is in my middle back and goes up to my shoulders.  I have pain at the base of my skull and the top of my head.  I also have pain right above my eyebrows.  My back feels like I have been wearing a very heavy backpack for weeks.  When I am lying down on my stomach and reach to do my PT exercises, I have a lot of pain in my forehead. It feels like someone is pulling on the flesh under my scalp. The flesh under my scalp feels very, very tight. This is not a headache.  I have had headaches and migranes in the past and they resolve themselves with OTC and ice and a nap.  This hasn't gone away.  I don't take pain meds as they eat my stomach, even with a full meal or with a pepto bismal chaser to coat my stoamch. It hurts the top of my head when I strain to make a stool or urinate.  I even contracted diverticulitus during this time as I think I was not evacuating sufficiently due to the head pain.  I do not have any radiation of pain or numbness or pins and needles down my arms or legs.  I do find that if I lay down too much, the pain radiates up my back and to the top of my head.  Also, if I sit in a hard chair for too long, the pain worsens. The neurologist said to wear a c-collar which made my pain much worse.  He didn't offer any other treatment plan. The Orthopedic surgeon said that an epidural steriod injection might help but he didn't offer anything else in terms of treatment.  I do sit at a desk all day but I have an ergonomic chair and I have worked at the same work station since the accident so I don't think it is the way I am sitting at work. My mattress is just about a year and a half old and I had been sleeping on it for over 9 months before the pain started. No doctor has given me a DX and when I tell them what the pain feels like they all say they have never heard of that before. I am short (5'2") and I weigh @165-170.  But I have lost 30 pounds over the last year and a half so I would think that the pain would be improving. The pain never goes away and I am realy getting frustrated that all the Dr.s I have seen have not offered any type of DX or treatment plan or even seem to be listening. Anything that anyone could tell me would help.  I don't want to live like this the rest of my life. I want to treat it and not simply mask it with pain meds.

Hi,sorry to know it.
I have read all you put in,It seem that you suffer soft tissue injury in neck and back region,I don't think "3 buldging discs in your  neck and 1 in your mid back"  can lead to your this kind of pain, according to your symptom, your pain is due to inflammation tissue.I guess.

Of course, that's my personal opinion and It's hard to give you right idea without physical examination.
Anyway,You should go to see reputable doc,it's not waste time.
Good luck!
