Can I breestfeed safely?

by Katiedec2008, May 29, 2008 01:44AM
I am 11 weeks pregnant and am looking into the risks of infecting my child with Hep C through breestfeeding.  I would like to know if the benifits of breestfeeding are really worth the risks of infection?  Basically if there is a chance of infection I WON'T breestfeed.  I am in remission with normal liver counts in all tests and have been since 6mths after i was infected nearly 10 yars ago. What do you think?

I have been told that the risk from breastfeeding comes not from the breastmilk, but from the cracked, bleeding nipples that can sometimes occur.

This was concern of mine because I breastfed for 13 months and one time during that period I did have that condition. My daughter is now 19 and will be tested next week.  (I was recently diagnosed.)

At the time I decided to breastfeed because I had severe allergies and ear infections as a child and wanted her to avoid those problems.  In that sense it worked.  But ask me again next week after she gets her results-it is a little unnerving right now being unsure.

I am running late to  work now, but will look around this afternoon to post some links on this for you.  Google around and get as much information as possible.  IMHO, at the end of the day, the best thing for your baby is love. Not whether you breast feed or bottle feed.

Best of luck to you.

What do you mean by remission, and how did you get there?

I breast fed both of my kids and I had no idea at the time I was infected. They are both negative.

I don't know what "remission" is regarding hepatitis...I've never heard of this in my life. If you mean you are UNDETECTIBLE or SVR after a long period then you no longer have the disease in you and cannot therefore pass it on.

It's one or the other. You either have active virus or not - there is no in between with this one.
