13 month grandaughter just diagnosed with Type 1

by MereMer, May 30, 2008 08:00AM
How can I best help my daughter, son in law, and darling 13 month old grandaughter who is in the emergancy department, just diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes?  I am hundreds of miles from my family, and want to support them in the best way possible, but have no idea what to say to offer hope and encouragement, as i have no idea of the prognosis for one so young. Does anyone have suggestions to help me support my family through this difficult time please - long distance for the next few weeks at least? How does such a young child adapt to life with diabetes. Is there a book anyone can recommend that is particularly helpful please?

I was diagnosed with type one when I was 18 and many of my lifestyle habits had already been formed, so I had "re-learn" a lot... the UPSIDE to being diagnosed so early in life is that good habits can be introduced from the very beginning.  By the time she's old enough to understand what she has, she will be in such a routine that it will be like brushing her teeth or washing her hands after she goes to the bathroom.

If she's receiving medical treatment, the prognosis is most likely very good.  Once on an insulin drip, the body bounces back after a few days.  The most taxing element to a new diagnosis is the changes in lifestyle, but if the parents are strong and can keep up with the constant diet restrictions, testing of blood sugar and injections, she should live a totally normal life with little in the way of complications.

good luck.
