Plavix Side Effects

by Jeanette107, May 30, 2008 01:53PM
My brother-in-law has been diagnosed and is receiving treatment for Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia.  He is very concerned about the Plavix he's taking since initially it was mentioned as a possible cause of the blood test results.  Can Plavix cause a misdiagnosis of Leukemia (specifically ALL)?  How do you confirm the ALL is not plavix - neutropenia related? and actually is leukemia?  I believe that his doctors, home oncologist in Lynchburg VA and group at University of Virginia, have done the tests necessary to confirm he has ALL but he still has concerns.  Is there a medication that can be substitued for the plavix? - I believe this concern about the plavix is causing him a great deal of stress and it would be mentally and emotionally beneficial for him to change medications.

Thanks

Why is he on plavix?  There is a substitute but it has more bone marrow side-effects than plavix, therefore, I would not recommend it in this situation.  The leukemia is easily tested for by finding a clone of dividing lymphocytes by a test called flow cytometry.  I am sure the oncologist, who known much more about this than I do would have ordered this test before diagnosing him with the disease.
