helping 11 year old son with catheter

by tibeaux1978, May 31, 2008 12:46AM
Hello,

Our 11 son was recently diagnosed with fairly bad reflux after a particularly nasty bladder and UTI.  He was having increasing problems voiding and is still having difficulty doing so.  He is scheduled for further tests but until then we have been told we will need to catheterize him several times a day to ensure that the urine does not sit in his bladder or urethra and cause an infection again.

He is getting discharged from hospital on Monday but they are teaching us how to catheterize him this weekend.  He puts up a HUGE fuss when they cath him now.  He has had to be restrained because he fights them so hard.
The male nurses on his floor say that they can teach him how to do it himself but he doesn't want to learn and just wants nothing to do with any of it.

Is there anything anybody can suggest to make it easier for him to tolerate ?

Thank you ?

I am not sure if this matters or not but he is not circumcised.
He is just having a tremendous amount of difficulty tolerating the catheterization.
