Old root canal giving me fits!

I had a root canal done in 1980, then had to have it redone in 1998 by an endodontist due to infection in the bone. (I think I remember this was due to silver points that were used back in the 80's) Anyway, I have had 4 root canals and none of them have ever given me a moments trouble - didn't even hurt when they were done. But this one is driving me crazy. It is the next to the last molar on the bottom right and does have a crown. About 2 months ago I began to have some sensitivity to pressure in that area, but it would come and go and never was very painful. I mentioned it to my dentist on my last cleaning visit last month. She had me bite down - no problems. X-ray looked fine. Then yesterday, the tooth began to really hurt - like an abcess would hurt, especially when applying pressure. And of course it is the weekend so I have to wait until Monday. Should I go ahead and try to see an endodontist ASAP? The only way I am able to stay out of pain is to wear my bite splint, that I wouldn't wear at night so it was just sitting in the night table drawer. What a life saver because it prevents any other tooth from touching that tooth. Any thoughts??
