HIV from brief unprotected oral encounter ?
Answered by
Edward W Hook, MD - HIV Prevention, stds
This forum is limited to prevention of HIV and to safe sex in general. If you believe you might have been exposed to HIV and want help to judge your risk, would like advice about HIV testing, or have questions about the effectiveness of condoms or the risks associated with specific sexual practices, this is the site for you.

IMPORTANT

No questions will be accepted on the treatment of HIV/AIDS or its complications, viral load, and similar topics. If you have questions about a specific STD other than HIV/AIDS, please visit the STD Forum. Questions that do not pertain to the above topics will be removed from the forum.

If you have not done so, please review other threads in our archives for questions similar to yours and Dr. Handsfield's replies. Questions that duplicate other frequent ones, for which abundant replies exist, and that have little educational value for other forum users, will be DELETED WITHOUT RESPONSE. YOUR PAYMENT WILL NOT BE REFUNDED. The most common examples of such questions are those about low risk exposures to HIV, such as oral sex, condom- protected intercourse hand-to-genital exposure, and nonsexual contact with possibly infected blood or body fluids as well as symptoms of early HIV infection.

HIV from brief unprotected oral encounter ?

To Dr HHH,
I wanted to get your opinion on a recent incident this week ( i have already posted on the no-expert forum). I went to a massage parlour in the UK and asked for a basic massage with hand relief ( safe option !). However the CSW got carried away and started to lick the head of my penis for 3-5 seconds then put my penis in her mouth for around another 5 seconds. I have a fairly good understanding of HIV and risks, but still feel that I may have exposed myself to HIV and STD's and therefore need to vist GUM. I rang a helpine and they said no because its only theortical that i could a catch HIV ( receptive oral), more dangerous for the CSW and that the time was very short ..can you advise, im planning to have another child and im not sure wether i can have relations with my partner.
thanks

Your risk is miniscule, verging on non-existent.  I will briefly tell you what you've heard before.

There is no risk to you from masturbation.  Your only penetrative exposure was receipt of oral sex.  That resulting risk is miniscule.  The quoted risk for HIV transmission, if your partner was infected and she was most likely not, is less than 1 in 10,000.  Given the brevity of your exposure, your risk is still lower.  All of this, of course, is only the case if she was infected and as I said before, it is unlikely she was. Putting all of this together, your risk is so close to zero that there is no medical reason for you to even have HIV testing.  I suspect, given the fact that you've now asked at least three different sources, that my reassurance will not be sufficient either.   If you get tests, please realize that it is for your piece of mind, not medical reasons.  That being the case, wait until at least four weeks after exposure (8 would be better) to get tested so you can have confidence in the result.

As for relations with your partner, as you can imagine from what I've said, there is no reason to abstain because of the exposure you describe.  Hope this helps.  EWH

Dr. Hook is unexpectedly away from the forums for a couple of days, on personal business.

You were at no risk whatsoever.  The additional information doesn't change Dr. Hook's advice.  Your symptoms suggest anxiety more than anything else.  See your personal health care provider if they continue or you remain concerned.  But there is no point in any further comments or questions here.  We cannot help any more than we have.
