water infections when on period

by emzy_m, Jun 02, 2008 02:47PM
hi ,i was wondering  if anyone would be able to help, i quite often get water infections have done for years, i take anything i can for them yet nothing helps, sometimes the symptoms last 2days sometimes 2months-most annoyed and painful 2months ever i have to add!
about a year ago when i came on my period i got all the symptoms of a water infection and then every time i came on i got the same thing, it stopped for a few months but has started again, i have seen a few doctors about it and they said they didn't know wat it was that it must be a water infection, yet since when do they last more than a few weeks, especially when having antibiotics for it. i have been given different antibiotics, tried cranberry juice, cystitis relief sodium citrate-EVERYTHING.
sometimes it will be fine for a few hours and then come back for a few days etc.

im getting to the point where im just totally giving up, it getts me so upset and down because i just don't know what to do.

is ther anyone out there that has this or knows of it, or even better that could give me some advice on how to contro it and stop it??
i would really appreciate it.

love em xxx

Sorry to hear of your problems.  Just a couple of ideas spring to mind.  Do you have Endometriosis?  If so it is possible for this to be in the bladder too.  It may be worth getting a cystoscopy done to check for your bladder health generally.  This is a tube with a camera inserted into your bladder.  It can be done under local or general anaesthetic.  The other possibility is that you are experiencing urine retention at the time of your period.  With all the hormonal changes and the thickening of the uterus etc. this can put pressure on the nerves supplying the bladder, and you may fail to empty properly.  If you are retaining, then this is an ideal breeding ground for infection.  If it is somehow possible to see your doctor during your period, empty your bladder, and then ask for a bladder scan immediately after, this will show if there is retention.  A bladder scan is just a hand held device which when held against the skin shows the quantity of residual urine in the bladder.  This should be well under 100mls for optimum health.  If your are retaining, you may need to self catheterize which means you empty your bladder manually.  First things first though, check with your gynae, get the scan from your doc, don't be fobbed off by anyone, and I really hope you get the right answers.  Best of luck.  Oh, and keep taking the cranberry.

thank you, i will try that, thank you so much though, i have seen a few doctors about this and one was very rude to me about it saying it was all in my mind and that me being on my period wouldn't affect anything to do with my bladder, which just made me feel so small etc.
i will go to my doctor and ask them about this and to get tested.
im not aware of having enometriosis, i've just looked it up and all the symptoms are there, so i will definatly go see my doctor, at least i have something to say to them ie could it be this or this etc

p.s. cranberry is an essential that is always in my fridge! xx
