Herpes and Penile Discharge

Hi Doctor Handsfield,

It's me again and I had a few more questions so I thought I would pay & repost.

I'm going to the STD clinic tomorrow to get my penis swabed because I'm still experiencing discharge after straining.  Here's my questions.

1.Will the lab be able to diagnose if the discharge from my penis swab is herpes?  I've read that you can only diagnose herpes by a culture swab of an open lesion of a sore, I'm hoping that the discharge will be able to tell for certain what it is.  Do you think it will?

2.What color is a herpal discharge?  why discharge today was a murky color (after milking my penis to derain out the urine).

3.I've read tonight that diagnose of NSU is very uncommon after for than 2-3 months after initial exposure.  Is this true?  if it is true,  then my diagnoses would be incorrect as my initial exposure was 9 months ago.

4.Is it possible that herpes could be causing this discharge this late after my exposure?  Would genital HSV 1 cause these Symptoms (Penis & Anus discharge)

5.Is it possible that the rectal exam I received from the doctor is causing my problems?  In just a few days after my exam I had penile discharge and also the hot feeling and like wet-like feeling  between my anus (it almost feels like a discharge)?

6.I've been on Doxycycline now for 4 days and my symptoms are feeling worse (penis pain, groin pain, back, sore testicles).  Is this typical, should'nt I start to a feel bit better if I have NSU?

7.I'm concerned that since the doctor said my prostate felt fine that herpes can be the only cause of all these symptoms, especially after finding that NSU is extremely rare after exposure after 2-3 months and that prostatitus is not likely because my prostate felt normal.  Any insight on what else could be causing this discharge would be greatly appreciated. I've been extremely distressed these past few days.

I read up on Pelvic Pain Syndrome but could not see any symptom of Penis Discharge.

Thank-you in advance

I still am not convinced you have herpes, but see a provider immediately (within a day or two) for accurate diagnosis.  Stop trying to find the answer online; it isn't going to happen.

This forum is not a substitute for proper medical care.  No more comments or I will delete the entire thread.

Hi Doc I appreciate your response back, I have noticed today a single small red shinny like ulcer on my penis shaft.  I'm just devastated, I must be i the 1-2 % of people who have discharge as a symptom, herpes must be the only explanation for this sore that has just sprung up. This is the first time I've had a sore on penis since my initial exposure in August.  I just can't believe it.  I know you said that you would not respond back, but have you ever heard of or seen anyone with Herpes show these types of symptoms this late?

Maybe 1-2 percent of men with new genital herpes have penile discharge.  When it happens, it is a very painful event (some men say the worst pain they ever experienced) that lasts a few days with the initial outbreak only.  Most such men have obvious genital herpes with typical penile blisters or sores.  Herpes does not case long term, recurrent urethral discharge of the sort you descibe.

This is the reason that people who look to web resources for clues about their own diagnoses cannot simply translate a symptom on a list to evidence they have the condition.  Whether herpes or anything else, 90% of the time there is important additional information that websites don't mention, but that health professionals know is critical to interpreting the information.

You came to the forum (twice!) for reassurance.  It was given.  Please accept it and move on.  Herpes should be the farthest thing from your mind as an explanation for your symptoms.  I won't have any further comments.

I really appreciate your quick responses back.  You say that Herpes doesn't cause discharge, but there are alot sites on-line that say herpes can cause penile & vaginal discharge, now I'm really confused.  I'm just looking for some answers from qualified people like yourself.  I'm just trying to educate myself as best I can that's why I'm here.

I have nothing to add to the previous thread.  I already told you that discharge like you describe is not an STD symptom, and STDs are the only topic of this forum.

1,2,4) Herpes doesn't cause discharge.

3) I agree you probably don't have NGU.

5) Rectal exam won't cause such symptoms.

6) Doxycycline isn't working because your symptoms are not due to infection.

7) No comment. Follow up with your doctor.

No further comments or discussion, please. You aren't going to get any answers by online searching.
