PPI and IBS

by lcjackso, Jun 03, 2008 03:38PM
I've just been diagnosed with IBS - back in January I suddenly started getting severe acid reflux and was put on proton pump inhibitors (I've been on prevacid and am now on prilosec). This stopped the acid reflux but not the bloating/indigestion/stomach pain. Shortly after starting the PPI's I started getting constipated and having problems swallowing food. I've had lots of tests (including an endoscopy) which have shown nothing, and a new gastroenterologist (I've moved) has diagnosed me as having IBS. It seems like I may have had mild IBS before (occasional constipation + gas) but nothing really noticeable.

I'm wondering whether the PPI's could be causing/aggravating the constipation + dysphagia (swallowing problems). I'm not planning to stop taking them (I know that acid reflux can become serious), but it would be good to know - maybe I could discuss reducing my dosage with my doctor (I'm currently on 2 a day).

Does anyone know if there is any evidence or had any experience of this?

Hey there, I suffer from IBS and GERD. So I feel your pain. As far as Prevacid the only side effects are: ABD pain, nausea and diarrhea. As far as Prilosec goes, the adverse reactions are: dizziness headache, Pain in ABD, diarrhea, gas, vomiting, constipation, cough, rash and back pain. You may not have all of these side effects but these are the effects that are reported. I'm not saying it is or isn't the med. but, you need to contact your MD. and have him/her check you
