That’s an excellent question, and I’m glad you’re concerned about your wife’s well-being and that you realize sex is not just an activity for when we’re in good health. In fact, when we have health challenges, sex can be very life-affirming. I’m wondering if you have asked your wife’s physician about the safety of any activities that might increase her heart rate at this point. Sex is like any other physical act: it raises your blood pressure and heart rate. I’m assuming your wife is not running, jumping, playing tennis, etc.—in short, anything that would put a strain on her heart. So when you and your wife are being sexual, as she becomes aroused, her heart rate will increase. Be sure to contact your doctor ASAP to find out if an increase in her heart rate is OK at this time. And please give her my good wishes for a successful surgical outcome. Dr. J

That is something she will need to discuss with her doctor. I would say if the medication she is on is controlling her problem, it should be fine, but this really is something that a doctor needs to tell you.
