Synthroid - Please help

Hi,
I developed an enlarged thyroid last year.  My TSH level is .080 as of April 08,.  I was prescribed Synthroid .075 mcg last year, to reduce the swelling of my thyroid.  Endo said my thyroid function is normal.  But I am a bit confused.

If my thyroid functions are normal, then why would an Endo prescribe synthroid for hypothyroid ??  Wouldn't synthroid make me hyperthyroid ??

Also the Endo said, unless I take my synthroid, further testing or removal of my thyroid cannot be done, hospital rules.  I have to abide by thier procedures (steps).

I am already an anxious person, that have heart palpitations with nearly every med I take.  Reason I don't want to take the synthroid in fear of heart palps from hyperthyroid from normal function.

Has anyone out there taken synthroid or knows someone that has taken synthroid to reduce a thyroid, with normal or close to normal range function, share side effects ??

Unless I take the med, the Endo basically tells me he can't help me.

Thanks for all feedback.

You should definitely give the synthroid a try, it looks like you need it for the nodules.  I have just an enlargment of the thyroid with no nodules on US or CT.  I also have some swollen glands, but that is altogether a different story I guess and I have an endo that is an absolute jerk.  Your doc seems on the ball and it seems like the procedure of med before surgery is just to ensure unneeded surgery is not performed if at all possible.  I think right now, you should trust your doc and go forward with the meds.  The meds take a little while to build up, so results may not be evident for a while.  If you get the jitters or other strange feelings, just be sure to discuss it with your doc.

Again, best of luck! ~Kim

Hi Kim,
Need to make a correction, my thyroid report say's,.  Nodule at the inferior pole of the left lobe measures about 2.2 x 1.8 cm,.  Nodule present in the isthmus more towards the left side measures 3.5 x 2.5 cm.

Hi AR,
Thanks for reply.  I haven't taken any synthroid yet (long story),.  I'm sorry, I should have written alittle more detail.

As for the endo, he said my TSH level .080 is normal, and for that reason no other tests needs to be done, but he did perform an antibody.

My TSH levels last fall was .089,.  So these are my levels, no synthroid treatment.

If .080 indicates hyper, this is the reason I am concerned about taking synthroid.  Cause I don't want to become over hyper.  But my doc or endo will not listen, and tells me unless I take the synthroid, they will not be able to advance to the next level of treatment.  And continues to tell me, my TSH is normal.  I was prescribed the med to reduce the thyroid swelling.  I have to take it for 6 weeks, then get retested.

Basically he is saying, it's his way or no way.

No, Free T4 and Free T3 tests ever done.

Have you had antibody tests run?
Answer: Yes, but I don't know the results or what to look for on lab results.

Have you had an ultrasound?
Answer: Yes, results were benign.

Were you tested for shortages of iodine, selenium, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, zinc, etc.?
Answer: No

If you have been dealing with this since last year there is a lot of things that should be done, if they haven't been already.
Answer: That's the problem, nothin has been done.  I just spoke with my endo on Friday, and he said until I take my synthroid, there's not much he can really do.  So I plan to start taking it tomorrow and have an endo appt on July 28,.

Just hope synthroid, doesn't have me bouncing off walls.

Thanks for all your help AR.

Hi Kim,
Thanks for reply.  I feel so much better about taking Synthroid.  I have a phobia about taking meds.

My thyroid measures 5.5 x 3.5,.  My ultrasound was benign.

Since my thyroid is functioning normal, the surgeon wants to try and reduce by med first, if the med doesn't work, then he will remove half my thyroid by surgery, because it's deviating my trachea.

I'm sorry I don't have any labs to post, other then TSH.  To be honest with you, I have no idea, what I'm look at, while reviewing my lab report, cause it's 9 pages long, with alot of different tests, alot with results and alot are empty.  The only one I could identify was TSH.

Wow AR - those are some great questions!  I wish I would have had those questions for the awful appointment I had yesterday -- not that they would have been answered mind you, since my doctor is obviously uninterested anyway and apparently I have "no thyroid".  Sorry, still angry, LOL, can you tell!  HA - anyway, whenever I find another doc, I guess those are questions I will ask.

Taking a T4 med like synthroid will often help to shrink a goiter, even if your Free T4 and Free T3 are in a "normal" range.

75mcg is going to have an affect on your hormone levels. Do you remember what your levels were last Fall wen you started the Synthroid?

A TSH level of .080 indicates you were hyper in April, and you are more hyper now if you have been taking your Synthroid.

Have you had Free T4 and Free T3 tests run? What were they in April?

Have you had antibody tests run, several of them?
Have you had an ultrasound?
Were you tested for shortages of iodine, selenium, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, zinc, etc.?

If you have been dealing with this since last year there is a lot of things that should be done, if they haven't been already.

Your dosage should have been lowered so you would not go so hyper. But I'm just a carpenter, so... :o)

I too am in your same situation.  I was given a script for Levothyroxine (generic for synthroid) with normal funtion a two months ago.  Some on and off taking it since then and I have now taken it every day for about three weeks.  The on an off is a long story, conflicting doctors and some weird symptoms that have now been determined to be from the Chantix I was taking, not the Levo.  Anyway, my thyroid is enlarged and I had normal blood levels when prescribed.  I just had a retest for my levels, so I am not sure what they are now.  I have not had any adverse reaction to the Levo since on it, except being tired during the day and sleepless at night, but that has leveled out with the help of advil pm.

Since your endo is discussing surgery, your thyroid must be on the large side.  I was told that the medication could help to control (or possibly shrink) the swelling of the thyroid.

If you would post your labs and size of your thyroid (such as measurements from Ultrasound) others in the community could definately be of help to you.

I wish you well and the best of luck during this process! ~Kim
