Throat spasm, difficulty swallowing, tingling in throat

by PRETTYREDGAL, Jun 08, 2008 03:29PM
About a month ago I was diagnosed w/ a sinus and ear infection. I was given augmentin which seemed to have cleared it up. I have been taking adipex for a month and I have recently started having some sinus drainage. I asked my doctor about it when I went to get my adipex prescription renewed and she told me to take mucinex (the blue and white box --expectorant) since it was safe to use with my adipex and would not make my heart race. Yesterday I was at my computer surfing the web and my throat did some type of spasm and I panicked because I could not breath. It may have lasted a few seconds but it happened over and over again. Then my heart starts racing and I get light headed.  My boyfriend rushed me to the emergency room where they immediately took me back because my heart rate was 141 bpm. The doctors tested my electrolytes, hooked me up on oxygen,  gave me a saline IV, and hooked me up to a heart moniter. Since I said I was taking adipex and mucinex they said that was the cause and that I should not take any caffeine or adipex. I did that. Today my throat is dry again, my heart is racing again, and my throat is spasming again. I want to go back to the doctor but I dont know what to say. All I have had today is water which is NOT helping with the dry throat. If I get to worked up the spasms get worse.

Each of the medicines you are taking can exhibit clinically significant side effects due to stimulation of the heart and central nervous system (CNS), but we could find no evidence of direct drug interactions.  Adipex-P® (phentermine), is especially noted for causing dry throat.

You should discuss this with your doctor but your best bet would probably be to discontinue all medicines and then re-introduce 1 medicine at a time, with careful self-observation.

hi! i have the same symptoms (for three weeks now) except my throat spams for long periods of time and then disappear (for a day or so) then they come back .... i have them now! my heart beat goes irregular, too!
I had an echo cardiogram and it is find.
My doctor thinks it is just an allergy and wants me to take Claritin and a decongestant like Sudafed (he says it won't make my hear race). My Doc looked in my ears and throat and can see lots of drainage and thinks my throat is contracting in reaction to that! wild huh? that we do not have solid answers.
I am going to go to a ear nose and throat specialist for a second opinion!
At the same time, I have no symptoms of a cold or flu....
