"Fetal demise" but still a heart rate: D and C or wait?

by brenandpen, Jun 10, 2008 07:31AM
Hi,

We have fetal shrinkage, but on the second U/S there was still a heart rate. The ultrasounds were done at 5 weeks and 7 weeks. HR was low both times: 75 bpm. Size was 4mm 1st and 2.5mm second. So 50% shrinkage in 2 weeks.

Should we wait for fetal death, ie no HR, or go for the D and C even though there is still a low HR? All examples here seem to be about situations where the fetus has died. Have you heard of any situation where the fetus has made a full recovery after shrinkage?

Should we wait for death before a D and C, just in case there is a full recovery? Or am I delusional?

You should definatly wait.  Babies are so hard to measure this early because they are so tiny, it is very possible that the baby was measured inaccuratly on one of those occasions.  There is a heartbeat, there is  a baby that is alive. I would not get a d/c until you know there is no heartbeat and you have other signs of miscarriage.  Good luck!!

I'm with cheesecake. You don't want to be looking back on this asking the what if question. I would wait until my body began miscarrying and then if needed would get the D&C. Your little bugger may be fighting still. Keep us up to date.

I WOULD WAIT....anything could happen and you are in no danger that I know of by waiting.  I wish you the best.  Trust God and know everything is planned according to His will.  Please keep us updated!

Please wait! Your body will know what to do if the baby is not growing at the right rate. A heart beat means your baby still has a chance. Don't let the doctor's pressure you.

Thanks all,

Thanks for all the wishes. Unfortunately the little fighter didn't make it... But he/she put up a great battle...

Good luck with everything to you all.
