HIV...HELP!!!

by ilovgarf, Jun 11, 2008 07:35AM
My brother has been HIV+ for over 10 years now and Ive accepted this with no prejudice.  I am very close to my brother but the problem is he doesnt always want to talk about it.  Yesterday we ran some errands together and he tells me his doctor who specializes in Infectious Disease wants him to see another doctor who I believe is an Oncologist.  I also noticed my brother has a rash.  He takes no medications at this time.  His Tcell count has been over 400 but 2 months ago was retested and is now 350.  He is considering taking the medication now.  My question: Is this the beginning of the end?  Im scared for him.  He also tells me especially in the morning his hands and feet are numb and he has trouble getting out of bed.  My brother is a good person, he is as some people would say strange as he is slow mentally but he is still a person who I love dearly.  If someone could give me some insight as to what to expect from here I would appreciate it.  Why would his doctor want him to see an Oncologist?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Don't be scared.  Your brother has not been diagnosed with any cancer. That doctor just wants to rule it out.  His CD count is not that bad.  And you make no mention of his viral load. The numbness may be peripheral neuropathy.  I do not know the cause of it but I suffered with it for over 1 year in 1999. After I was taken off one of my meds it went away. I remember it was very painful and I had to use a cain to walk for a while. They treated me with neurontin.  I hope the meds work for him. Make sure he eats healthy and takes his meds.

His viral load is 120000 from what he was telling me.  I dont know what a viral load is.  He doesnt take any meds at all but he was saying that he will be starting them.  Some new drug that has AZT in it but its a combination of 2 others as well.  I do want to thank you for replying and giving me some insight.  May you stay healthy as well.  Thank you.
