Based on the above in our Organ Procurement Center
and Nicks age....
Am I reading this correct?  from 1994 to present
UC Davis Medical Center has only done 15 TP
within Nicks age group?

Am I thinking clearly? should we try and list at other
locations outside of our region?
It is a lot of work to go through, but the statistics above
aren't very encouraging right?
Thank you

No, relax! Age has nothing to do with it. I see you have discovered the rich resource in the UNOS data reports. That is good and bad. Be careful not to draw too much from the stats, because there is a pretty wide variance from the norms for particular cases. You probably should note the number of candidates listed and their MELD scores. Another useful stat is the number of transplants done recently and the MELD scores of the recipients.

Listing in multiple regions is always an option, where you can get to another region in a reasonable.

Let me know if I can help. I'll send you some info in a PM.

Hugs,
Brent

To date, the number of liver transplants in the state of California is 12,314 and 205 were done this year so far. Of those transplants, 4,555 were blood type A (56 this year). Of those 56 done this year for blood type A, the breakdown for MELD score is as follows:

06 = Liver Status 1A or B
38 = MELD >24
06 = MELD 19-24
04 = MELD 11-18
00 = MELD 24 (63.4%)
048 = MELD 19-24 (18.9%)
007 = MELD 11-18 (2.7%)
005 = MELD  24, but a large number are done on MELD = 19-24. Note that this breakdown is only for blood type A, and is for the whole state of California. Donor organs are allocated first to the local OPO, though sometimes contiguous OPOs will share donor organs.

These are just statistics. They mean nothing for a particular case. But they can also give you a good idea of where the trends or averages are. Hope this helps. Feel free to call.

Brent

!!! Skip that last post, something in the editing messed it up !!!!
There should have been another block of data for 2007 and some text is missing???

I'll try again:

To date the number of liver transplants in the state of California is 12,314 and 205 were done this year so far. Of those transplants (12,314), 4,555 were blood type A (56 this year). Of those 56 done this year for blood type A, the breakdown for MELD score is as follows:

06 = Liver Status 1A or 1B
38 = MELD 25+
06 = MELD 19-24
04 = MELD 11-18
02 = Living Donor

A better view is had by looking at a larger, but recent sample from California. There were 254 liver transplants done in California in 2007 for blood type A recipients. They break down by status like this:

020 = Status 1A or 1B (7.9%)
161 = MELD 25+ (63.4%)
048 = MELD 19-24 (18.9%)
007 = MELD 11-18 (2.8%)
005 = MELD  <10 (2.0%)
013 = Living Donor (5.1%)

As you see, the larggest number of transplants occur with recipients with MELD scores of 25+, but there are also a large number done for recipients at MELD = 19-24.

Hard to think about him not outliving you. I can't tell you not to think about that, but I can say that all parents think the same way, whether our kids are healthy or not.

We worry when they start riding with other teenagers, we worry when they start driving.
We worry when the phone rings in the middle of the night, or if it doesn't ring and we're waiting for them to return our frantic calls. We worry when we hear the sound of sirens when our kids have left the house.

We worry about you, and Nick and when we're going to hear something from the transplant team.

My kids used to tease me about calling the Amber Alert when they didn't come straight home from school or work!

Take care of yourself my dear friend. You have a big job ahead of you and you'll need your strength. Don't waste it trying to forsee the future.
Only I can do that:)

LOL ! only you can worry? LOL
You called the Amber alert if your children
were late? I don't feel so bad now ! LOL
I know you are correct Bug, we all worry right?

We carry our children under our hearts for
nine months.  Then we carry them in our hearts
and under our wings for life.

Hugs to you my friend

Hi Elaine.  I used to post on the Hep C forum while I treated and haven't been to Medhelp for months.  I was transplanted 7.5 years ago, failed 72 weeks of treatment ending last year, but doing well over all and waiting for vertex.  Glad to see that Nick is doing well waiting for his liver.

Anyway, regarding UC Davis, here is an excellent web page on one person's liver transplant experience, which includes his transplant at UC Davis.  Don't know if you've come across this before, but it is very interesting as well as uplifting.  Once again, glad that things are going well for your son.

Hi Bt, and welcome ! yes I remember you from the HCV side.
First I'm sorry you did not clear....I agree..wait now for the Vertex
it really does look good. Glad you are doing well !!

Thank you for the link I have  read this article a few times
as a matter of fact.  All this guy went through, then went to UC Davis
and his life is fantastic !!
Trying to remain positive, I think this waiting is the driving me crazy!
Nick is sick most of the time and he welcomes a new liver.
Thank you BT , all my very best to you !!!
Don't be a stranger !!

It's good to see you back and to hear that you're doing well. I have thought about you a lot and wondered how you were doing. I hope that new and better treatments become available soon and that they will prove to be the answer for you.
Take care, Mike

Thanks for posting. I loved the story of the "hard way and Easy Way" for transplant. I saw a few parallels to my own experiences. Most of all, I was glad to hear of the great outcome at UC Davis. That bodes well for Nick and Elaine.

I am on the 72 week TX now. If this doesn't work, I'll be waiting for Vertex also.

Best wishes,
Brent
