Feeding a 1 year old formula & solid food

by auntieAB, Jun 12, 2008 06:58PM
My nephew is a year old and has taken to solid foods quite well. He loves cereal and ham, however my sister still gives him bottles of formula as well. He is not allowed regular milk (he was allergic to breast milk and now she's afraid he's allergic to milk) or juice. Is that healthy? I know formula has nutrients but at what stage is it necessary to move forward?

She really needs to switch him to whole milk. Even if she just tries a little bit to see if he's allergic at first. He shouldn't stay on formula.

I'm surprised her pediatrician hasn't said anything about that.  We use the Horizon's Organic Whole Milk. It's kind of expensive, but no more than spending the money on formula each week.

She needs to talk to her pediatrician.

My son was allergic to breast milk and regular formula and I was told that he would "grow out of it," but he never did. He'll be 2 next month and cannot have dairy or his digestion gets all out of whack, if you get my drift. So, I understand why your sister is hesitant to change him over to milk. I tried whole milk, but by time I got to 1/2 formula and 1/2 milk (like you're supposed to) he was a giant mess...literally.

What kind of formula does he drink? Is it soy? My son drinks Silk original and does just fine. It was a simple transition and is SO MUCH CHEAPER! They make formula for kids ages 12 months to 24 (maybe even 36) months, so the fact that he's still on formula isn't the worst thing in the world. It has everything he needs in it, especially if she's using the older kid kind, which is a few dollars cheaper anyways. It has more calories in it, which is what he needs if he's one.
