by PAT379, Jun 13, 2008 11:07AM
WHAT IS THE GENERAL CONCESUS RE INCLUDING BIO'S IN TREATMENT?  I HAVE STAGE 4,BC METACISED
TO BONE AND LIVER.  PROGNOSIS IS GOOD RIGHT NOW. AM ON ZOMETA AND PAIN MEDS.

I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE RISK OF BIO'S INCREASING BONE CELL  GROWTH,  THEREBY INCREASING GROWTH OF GOOD AND BAD CELLS. ANY INFO ON THAT ISSUE??

THANK YOU.

Hi.  Bisphosphonates in general, and Zometa in particular, not only help repair bone that has been damaged by invading metastatic cancer cells.  This class of drug also helps prevent further spread of the cancer in the bones.  In a recently published study by the Austrian Breast and Colorectal Cancer Study Group (ABCSG), it was also shown that taking Zometa can reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence by 36% in women with early breast cancer.  The reduction is noted even in non-bone metastases, and in a reduced risk of contralateral breast cancer occurrence.  So there's no truth to the notion that Zometa "increases growth of bad cells".  The evidence shows the contrary to be true.
