endocrinologist or neuro/endocrinologist

by Mel3232, Jun 14, 2008 11:09AM
Hi, I have been experiencing many symptoms for the past 5 months.  Notably weight loss (15 lbs in 2-2.5 months), daily migraines, fatigue, carpal tunnel, joint pain, troubling swallowing, vertigo (vestibular problem not central) muscle weakness, reflux and visual problems.  Now I have a lot of endocrine disorders ostopenia, hashimoto, PCO, possibly hypercalcemia and those are the only  ones that have been diagnosed.  My doctor has told me I need to go to Johns Hopkins to see an endocrinologist since I have so mnay endocrine problems going on.  My question is should I see a regular endocrinologist or a neurologist/endocrinologist.  Is there possibly anything going on the requires me to see the specialities of both fields.  I had an MRI which was clear, positive ANA, very hight thyroid antibodies (over 1300), and elevated WBC, PTH 95, High normal values for Calcium, the rest of my bloodwork is normal.  So is there sometihng going on my with my pitutary, or adrenals or nothing. Also I am 32. Thanks for your help.

Go first to ENDO (urgently), then he will see (my opinion). Perhaps you should go next to a doctor of internal medicine (auto immune diseases). There are some specialists that have both (ENDO and Internal medicine) , like Dr. Lupo, that would be the best choice.

Your symptoms are similar to what I experienced having parathyroid disease. But I think those are also symptoms of other endocrine issues so I’d hate to have a conclusion drawn.

I’d start with the endo, as your dr suggested.  Especially since you couldn’t be going to a better facility – Johns Hopkins.

Not all those kind of issues show on an MRI.  The endo will probably order other tests.

Good luck.  Keep us posted.
