Learnin the hard way!!

by beentrying2quit, Jun 14, 2008 05:14PM
Holy cow!!!  I thought I was doing good on my gluent free diet today.  I purchased a frozen bag of mixed fruit so I could make smoothies in the morning...that sounded GREAT!  I had my first one this morning and it tasted wonderful.  I only put in the fruit and a little apple juice for some sugar taste.

That was at 7am today.  at 9am was the worst I've felt in years.  Extreme dizzyness, confused, bloated like I was pregnant, angry at the world, no appitite, legs and arms ached like never before, just felt like **** from head to toe.  Is it possible that there is some kind of preservative in the fruit that has gluten?  I've read that we cannot tollerate preservatives such as MSG?  What do you guys think.

I hear you. I am new to this too and still trying to figure it out. Some days I feel great and then others you are right I have the same sort of syptoms and then ask what did I eat and what was in it. Hard to believe little things like this could trigge such a result. Did you put anything else in it? Milk, yogurt, etc? There shouldn't be gluten in mixed fruit that doesnt make sense. How about oatmeal for you? I think protein powder for me is becoming a no, no.

I so totally hear you guys..this is so ridiculous...if you didn't put milk or yogurt maybe it was the apple juice.  I don't drink any kind of juice at the moment..I eat only fresh fruits.

Although, I haven't been tested for celiac I feel exactly how the two of you described whenever I eat something with dairy or gluten and the last GI doc said that he doesn't think that I am intolerant to Gluten.. I am supposed to put Gluten back in my diet to do the test but I am so so scared that I don't think am going to do the test at all.

Hope you feel better

Heck no I don't blame you who wants the pain from eating the wrong thing. And for me it lasts for days I can hardly stand myself almost feel like crying. If it gets too bad it makes me feel nauseas. I only did the genetic test and I have the genes plus the symptoms so we put 2 and 2 together but darn I almost wish it was something else that could be fixed.

that's what I try telling all these GI docs...that when I get whatever it is I feel weak for days, my arms and legs are so weak that all I want to do is go lay down but I keep on doing my every day routine.  I get nausea, feel like am going to pass out, diarrhea and just a total feeling of unwell which will last for a few days..I try explaining that if it lasted for an hour or two that would be fine but it goes on for days which gets me scared.  i just found out about the Gluten or Celiac about 6 weeks ago..before that I had no clue what was going on with me.  I am supposed to get tested at the end of the month but like I say ..I don't think so(if the only way is eating foods with gluten again).

How did you get tested?

I didn't go to a specialist I talked with the head of Celiac disease foundation here and she suggested I order the genetic test from Prometheus labs and have my gp run it. So that is what I did. It came back that I had the one dominant gene and a lower risk gene for it, and since I am symptomatic it looks like the gene has been activated. Apparently you can develop this anytime in life is something activates it such as stress, viral infection or some other trigger. With the gene test it is blood so you don't have to worry about what you eat and it only took 3 days. If I can help further let me know. Hope you feel ok.

one of the GI doctors did the test for Celiac..the IGA..etc. ..but that came back negative..would that be the same test you did?..She had a complete blood work done on me but I had no idea about the Celiac at the time...she never even mentioned Celiac to me but I saw it on the results.
