HPV

by MedQuest36, Jun 16, 2008 09:19AM
Hi,

I had several questions regarding HPV and warts. On the shaft of my penis, I have a small, skin-tag like bump (about 1mm in diameter) just below the head. I do not know whether this is genital warts and am growing fairly concerned. I've had unprotected sex with girlfriends before, but not within the past year+. I also believe I have a small wart on the palm of my hand. My question is, could I infact be infected with HPV if this has shown up years later? Could I have infected myself through masturbation with the wart on my hand?

I basically freaked out the other day and decided to investigate as closely as possible. When I look at the skin down there, every small bump or anything that doesn't look like flat skin has me questioning. Is skin normally bumpy at the point where your penis shaft meets the head? Are skins tags normal on that part of the body? Is there anyway to test that this is in fact HPV before I go see a doctor?

Next, if this is HPV, what are my treatment options? What are the implications as far as sexual activity goes. If I receive treatment, can they still be transmitted and will they return?

Thanks for your help.

It's late, so forgive me for not writing out an in-depth response.

The only way to know what this is, is to see a doctor, unfortunately.  I wish I could put your mind at ease and tell you what it is and isn't, but this simply isn't possible.

There are TONS of treatment options available for HPV, and you can learn about many of them in depth with a simple google search (but be careful, there's a lot of false info about HPV out there) or through a credible website (see my journal for links).  Warts recur in about 20 or so percent of people, but eventually all HPV infections resolve themselves.  After you haven't had warts for 3-6 months (6 months to be safe), you can assume you are no longer contagious.  There is a lot of good information about HPV transmission in the expert forums too, and it is very direct, I'd take a thorough look.

In the meanwhile though, I wouldn't worry until you've seen a doctor.
