Topotecan & ca-125

by Hazel30, Jun 16, 2008 08:24PM
Hello Dr. Goodman, My Mom just had her ca-125 test done after one full treatment (3 weeks) of topotecan to see whats going on.  Before starting topotecan 1 month ago her ca-125 was 147 and today its 164.  Is it possible, with this drug, that ca-125 will rise before it goes down?  I think I remember hearing that this particular drug tends to increase the ca-125 count and the drop.  She is feeling better in the stomach area since she began treatment.  Prior to she was having bad gas spasms and pain in the gallblader area which is were the recurrence began (capsul of the liver & spleen).

Thanks so much
Fiana

Hi Fiana and Terrin,

There are four parts to evaluating how a person is doing on chemotherapy:
-exam
-CA 125
-x rays
-performance status, symptoms, quality of life

if your mother is feeling better that is a great sign. keep on going with topotecan.

Thank you for the update on your mother
take care

My Dr had me wait to take a CA test, said it needed at least 3 treatments before we knew if it was working.   Lost some hair,  but did not need to wear a wig.  Also, white count was low, needed to get injections,  and makes you tired.
