Normal TSH, low Free T4

by KW29, Jun 17, 2008 08:17PM
Originally diagnosed with ?viral thyroiditis  TSH 19.8 and Free T4 9.8, started on eltroxin took it for 3 weeks then had normal values TSH 2.3 and Free T4 of 13.1.
I now have been off of the eltroxin for one month and my TSH is normal at 4.1, but my Free T4 is low at 9.0... what does that mean??

A TSH of 4.1 seems high.  The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists recommends capping normal TSH at 3, though some labs and doctors are still using an upper limit of 5 or 6.  Your low T4 would be why your TSH is still a bit elevated.

I agree wih hypofuzz.
Your TSH is a little too high because your thyroid hormones are low. Sounds like you were taken off the Eltroxin a little too soon.

What is viral thyroiditis? Never heard of that one.

Either your thyroid will catch up naturally, or it may be impaired now. I would insist on another test or two in a month or so and if your TSH is not down around 1.0 or 2.0, don't let the doctor brush it off as normal and all is well.

If your TSH hovers around 4.0 for months you will end up with a lot of symptoms and complaints while your doctor tells you everything is fine.

My family Doctor actually wanted me to stay on the synthroid until July. I went and saw a naturopathic Dr.  and she suggested going off of it, since it was normal and re-test in one month, so that's what I did.
I actually thought my TSH was normal because the reference range I have is 0.459-4.68, but it's very good to know that Clinical Endocrinologists have a lower standard.
Guess I will just wait it out for a couple of months, recheck and hope it goes back to normal without any damage.  If you have any other suggestions please share. Thanks for all your help everyone!
Thanks!
