partial dentures

I have only 6 lower front teeth remaining on the bottom and the same on the top.
The bottom teeth are in good condition but some or all of the top ones will  need extracting within the next 6 - 12 months because they are not good.
My dentist suggests I get bottom partials now which  will give me time to get used to them being in my mouth, and also help protect the remaining bottom teeth while we work out exactly what the best thing is to do with the top ones.
Is this a good plan or would it be better to wait and get both dentures made and fitted at the same time? He says that the bite can be adjusted whichever way we do it and won't be a problem.
