What will a fertility specialist do in my case?

by Pkriztal, Jun 18, 2008 05:04PM
I am 24 years old.  My period has never been regular at the begininng my family
doctor thought it was because I was active in sports and dancing.  Well about the age
16-17 which was right after I stopped taking birth control my periods dramatically decreased
from about q other mo. to about q 3-4 mo. Then about age 18 to now I have my period q 2-3
years.  From time to time I get lower R. and L. quaderant pain.  I have seen about 4 different
doctors that don't really give me an answer or test me.  1 doctor ran labs and said they were
all normal, another said at age 18 I was going through menapause without any testing.  For
about the past 2 weeks my breast have been hurting.  The first 4-5 day I was crying.  Now
are sore and my nipples are always hard.  I have been wearing a sports bra to try and ease
the pain.  I took a pregnancy test even though I hate to because I know what it's going to
say every time.  No I am not pregnant.  So what would a specialist suggest I do and why do
my breast hurt.

If you only having your period once every 2-3 years you need to find out why.  This should not require a specialist, but a good OB/GYN.  This person might first try to induce your period with meds.  May also want to test your thyroid hormone level, since one symptom of a thryoid problem is irregular periods.  These are not fertility tests but a way to try and figure out why you are not menstruating.

If your period starts, may then do some bloodwork on cycle day 3.  FSH and estrogen are typically measured, this is to test your ovarian reserve. If the levels are too high, then you may be referred to a specialist.

If your period doesn't start, then it may be that or something else. Its hard to say without some testing though.  Breasts hurting could be related or not.
